I love my two kitty cats, Sterling and Marmalade. They are part of the family, and I spoil them more than I do human members of our clan. But the shedding all over our home was driving me a little cuckoo. If you know me, you are aware I am a bit like a rabid dog when it comes to cleanliness. One cat has long hair and hardly ever sheds. The other has short hair and sheds like it is raining cats. If someone sat on my furniture, I was concerned I would have to use a lint roller to their entire backside. I guess there is a reason they call it fur-niture. Instead of properly learning how to deshed my pets, I was deshedding my guests’ butts. Most likely, not the parting gift they were expecting.

Luckily, my husband owns a veterinary hospital in Charlotte and has been practicing for over 40 years. With his expertise and guidance, the pet shedding is now almost non-existent. Following his advice on how to deshed our pets along with some other household, recommendations have made our home an inviting place. Now when friends and family come for a visit, they do not feel like they have been tarred and feathered.

Ridding your home of pet hair starts with deshedding your pet. There are several devices on the market to deshed your pet, yet my husband’s clients (and me!) have found these to be the most helpful and effective.

Use the FURminator to Deshed Your Pet

What is unique about the FURminator compared to other brushes or tools, is it actually removes the undercoat very effectively. Unlike brushing and combing, deshedding removes the loose, dead undercoat from the pet without cutting or damaging the topcoat. Undercoat deshedding reduces the shed hair in all pets and also can help reduce hairball formation in cats. They have tried many other brands at my husband’s practice, and the FURminator is the go-to choice by the staff.

For best results, use the FURminator undercoat deshedding tool one time a week for 10 minutes. However, the actual time will vary depending on your pet’s breed, the condition of their coat, and the thickness of the pet’s particular coat. It may be necessary to use the undercoat deshedding tool more frequently during heavy shedding seasons. FURminator’s grooming edge is designed to make grooming pets faster and easier. In contrast, the skin guard design eliminates digging and allows the tool to glide over most pet skin.

The FURminator comes in different variations for your dog or cat, depending on their body size and hair length. I have to be honest, we use the same one on both our long and short hair cat, and it does an amazingly great job on each cat. When you deshed your pet with this tool, you will get a lot of hair. Like a whole lot, especially the first time you use it. Our cats love it, but after about 10 minutes, they are done being loved on by the brush. There is typically a furball the size of a small bunny remaining from all the brushing.

Use a Slicker Brush to Deshed Your Pet

The slicker brush at first glance looks like some medieval torture device with all those short, stiff wires. But it is an excellent tool for use on a very short hair dog like a dachshund, a doberman, a boxer, or other shorthair breeds. Brushing the pet from the neck back towards the tail stays with the natural hair direction. Applying gentle pressure as you brush will actually massage the pet’s skin. You only need to use the brush for 3 or 4 minutes. The brushing action will cause the pet to release any loose hair and stimulates oil production to make the haircoat look sleeker. If you are having trouble with extra shedding from your pet, you should brush once daily for 2 weeks during the shedding season and then taper off.

Designated Washable Pet Beds

Another tip is to provide a specific bed for each pet in the main areas they already sleep. If your pet has a designated bed, they aren’t laying and, consequently, shedding all over the house. I have permanent pet beds in the public area of my home that compliments the design style of our home. I use less expensive pet beds in other areas, as my cats seem to move frequently throughout the day following the sun. Honestly, I think Marmalade is a cat sundial.

All of the beds are removable and washable. This is key to keeping down the pet hair throughout the house as it segregates the hair into one area. Each week, the beds are washed and dried as the cats are being FURminated. Training a cat to sleep on their new bed requires a little catnip (a.k.a. cat crack). Sprinkle it onto their bed periodically if they do not instantly gravitate to the new bed. Your dog may be trained with healthy dog treats you can obtain from your local veterinarian.

Salvaging Your Furniture From Pet Hair

Two items are currently indispensable in my home for ridding furniture, floors, and carpets from pet hair.

One is Gonzo Pet Hair Lifter, or as I lovingly call it, my pet sponge. How this works differently from a regular sponge, I will never know; yet, it works incredibly well. Honestly, I would give it out as gifts if I didn’t think my friends would take it the wrong way. This is the best thing I have ever bought under $10 to rid my furniture and clothes of pet hair.

The other is my beloved Dyson vacuum. If you have read some of my other blog posts, you know my secret love affair with my Dyson products. I use the Dyson Cyclone V10 Animal Lightweight Cordless for almost all of my everyday tasks on furniture and floors. When I am doing a more in-depth clean, I grab the Dyson Upright Vacuum Cleaner for more prolonged usage or heavy-duty tasks.
