This past weekend I was in Savannah, Georgia. I was wearing light wash denim jeans for my walking history tour (but more about that in just a minute). Founded in the late 1700s, Savannah is famous for many significant historical occurrences. Throughout the next century and into the Civil War, it became a city that struggled, evolved, and finally flourished as one of America’s most unique cities. Savannah is heavily studied by historians, urban planners, and landscape architects because of its unusual characteristics.

In 1994, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a nonfiction novel by John Berendt, became an international best-seller and put Savannah on the map as a tourist destination. Just three years later, the movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, also soared to critical acclaim. One of the most famous statues in Savannah is the Bird Girl, or as the owner of the statue named her, Little Wendy. She is both on the book’s cover and an integral part of the film’s promotional materials.

The main character, Jim Williams, would hand out cards throughout the week for his famous Saturday night parties. He had two stacks of cards. One said ‘in,’ the other said ‘out.’ The light wash denim versus dark wash denim dilemma is nowhere near as juicy and dramatic as Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Yet, some individuals are very polarizing on their viewpoint concerning shades of denim. It is either a dark wash or light wash. However, in the fashion world, every shade of denim is ‘in.’ Like the various jeans styles from super skinny to wide-leg, so is the diversity in shades of denim washes. It is a melting pot era for jeans. Pretty much anything goes right now, and light wash denim has joined the inner circle as one of the top ten Fall Trends For 2020; light wash denim is shining bright. It is a good thing, as I packed two different light wash styles for our weekend getaway.

What I Am Wearing

I appreciate the different looks that you can achieve with light wash denim. Unlike its deeper counterpart, dark wash denim is challenging to pair with black. However, light wash denim creates a nice contrast with darker tops and jackets and easily complements lighter colored tops. These mid-rise, side-button, wide-leg pants are Express Jeans, and they are only $80. Can I tell you what? I love them! They fit me like a glove, I embrace the light wash, retro-inspired wide leg, and they make my butt look higher. What is not to like? They fit TTS. I probably should have ordered the short versus the regular because they run long, but I typically wear heels with wide-leg jeans, so I kept them.

I have layered a Veronica Beard blouse and knit top for a fun look that jazzes up the jeans just a bit. The blouse is a linen & silk blend that I can wear year-round either by itself or layered under other items. I love a layered look no matter the season, which is why I paired this wide-rib knit which skims the figure for a flattering silhouette and helps to shape the striped blouse underneath. The blouse is TTS. The knit top runs a little small. I ordered my regular size, yet if you do not want a slim fit, order up a size.

My 27 Edit by Naturalizer Booties are no longer available, but you can find a similar style here. My handbag is by BOX San Sebastian, which I purchased in Spain during our last international trip before COVID-19. The memories from that trip with my husband and friends still warm my heart. The bag is no longer available, but here’s a similar style.

If you have been following me for any length of time, you know my current jewelry obsession is Missoma. You see me wear their necklaces almost every day. Regrettably (for my husband, LOL), it makes me want more and more to create different layered looks. I must say that I almost always receive compliments on them for the little bit that I am out and about.

Sometimes we need a lower price to fit within our budget; other times, a pair of jeans prompts us to splurge. I typically try to showcase multiple options of a similar style or product at different price points. Below I have showcased the selections from least to luxe within a collection of price points.
