Warm sunshine, cocktails with tiny parasols, crystal clear water, and beach music are a few images that immediately bring summer to mind. Lately, we have all snuggled up with cozy loungewear, although as spring turns into summer what I deem comfortable and cozy shifts with the season. The warmer days have me yearning for billowing blouses, cascading skirts, and sweeping maxi dresses. I long for the beach and poolside-inspired outfits that are almost as comfortable to wear as some of my Netflix-binging couch outfits. This season, I am mesmerized by laid-back resort wear more than ever before. It puts me in a trance similar to watching the ebb and flow of beach waves bubbling to shore. Luckily I have snapped out of it long enough to gather laid-back options for you to browse. As always, my options go from least to luxe in each category.
Kaftan or Caftan Choices
What is the difference between a kaftan or a caftan? The same difference between gray or grey? Nothing! Gray is more common in the U.S., while grey is more common in other English-speaking countries. Depending on the culture or region will determine the spelling of kaftan or caftan. The style of this dress is typically an ankle-length garment with long, flowing sleeves.
The kaftan is your wardrobe chameleon this season. Kaftans are the perfect onesie when you want to slip something on and look modish as quickly as it takes you to say, “honey, I called the helicopter to take me across town for lunch.” Seriously, you can dress a kaftan up and be the queen of the helipad, dress it down with flat sandals and a crossbody, or casually throw it over a swimsuit.
Maxi Dresses with a Relaxed Elegance
I melt for maxi dresses that offer comfortable, relaxed elegance imbued with a sense of ease and freedom. This season is all about free-flowing silhouettes in cool, lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton. These versatile, flattering maxi dresses evoke a feeling of an endless, carefree summer. Cue the poolside drinks topped with tiny parasols. I see myself wearing these maxi dresses throughout the entire summer. From swaying in a hammock, stretched out on the porch sofa reading a book, to walking hand-in-hand for an after-dinner stroll around town.
If you feel your flowy dresses do not offer enough definition around the waist (sometimes they are just one-size-fits-all), cinch it with a complementary or contrasting option. Yet, remember this season laid-back resort wear is just that — laid-back. So ensure your tied waist reflects the casual nuance of your dress or skirt.
Laid-back Resort Wear
Laid-back resort wear meshes with my relaxed personality. I love the lazy, hot, and humid days of summer. Even though I am as white as the whitest sand dune, I am a summer girl, through and through. I see myself as a sun-kissed, bronzed goddess walking at the shore’s edge. Ok, truth be told, I have had this same fantasy since I was about fourteen (so for almost 40 years!). I just can not tan, no matter how hard I have tried. I would turn a nice Pepto-Bismol pink, sprinkled with freckles on top. Today, if I need a little bronzy glow, I simply reach for my favorite sunless tanner to indulge in my mocha-skinned alter ego.
Whether you are a summer girl or not, you will be drawn to these feel-good options for warmer weather. These flowing, flattering options are forgiving on almost all body shapes. Offered in a kaleidoscope of colors, patterns, textures, and fabrics something is sure to mesmerize your fancy in laid-back resort wear for 2020. As always, let me know if you have any questions or leave a comment below about your own resort wear encounters. I can not wait to see your choices on social and tag me on selections and resort destinations.
