Spending more at home has transitioned many brands to more relaxed clothing options. As such, knits have made their way into unconventional casual pieces, as seen in joggers, sweats, relaxed dresses, and you guessed it – lightweight coats. A coatigan is the perfect transition piece for the fall season or for those more mild cities throughout the winter months.
The coatigan (some have coined it the cardi-coat) is simply a cross between a coat and a cardigan. A coatigan resembles a cardigan but has more substance and the functionality of a coat. Compared to a coat, the coatigan is typically longer in length than a jacket. Similarly, the coatigan may span from lightweight to heavier weight knits depending on your warmth needs. The coatigan term has been gaining popularity for the past couple of years with fashion brands. Some retailers have even added the coatigan to their outwear category, making it a fixed staple within their shopping options.
As an avid layering queen, adding multiple coatigans to my wardrobe was a no-brainer. This is an indispensable option for combating cold environments both inside or outside. From restaurants to wine dates with friends, a casual weekend, or a stylish twist to your typical workwear, a coatigan is an essential item for your wardrobe. No one’s closet should be without a jean jacket, leather jacket, and a coatigan for endless layering options throughout the fall and winter months.
What I Am Wearing
I like this outfit because I can dress it up or down by just changing my shoes from flats to heels. It has a casualness to it yet still looks polished. My Express Coatigan in cafe au lait is the perfect last layer for chillier months. This finely ribbed cardigan gives you that comfortable fit and cozy feel you want in a cardigan. It is super soft and feels good to the touch. I would describe it as light to medium weight for a coat. This coatigan runs large; I sized down two sizes.
I have layered a simple white Gap V-Neck Tee underneath. The modern fit with a bit of elastane for stretch and the softest Supima cotton and Modal make it my go-to tee. Plus, it is always under $20; it is often on sale, making it closer to $10. What is there not to love? Because of the modern fit, I typically order up one size, so they are not too tight.
The Rag & Bone Jeans have a skinny silhouette that is slightly cropped at the ankle. They look especially good with ankle boots, as pictured above. They have plenty of stretch, so they feel soft and flexible even after a big meal, LOL. They will go with pretty much everything, thanks to the dark blue wash and contrast stitching. These are my most favorite jeans for nicer restaurants where I can get away with wearing a darker finish jean. I finished off the jeans with this teardrop-loop covered buckle Halogen Belt. Even though the belt is considered a pink hue, it seems to be a bit of a chameleon as it appears to match other colors from pink to more burnt umber depending on what I am wearing. Both the jeans and belt are TTS.
My Franco Sarto Booties, in beige, flatter the ankle with a little side notch. I like the angular, stacked heel, which adds a moderate amount of height, while the low shaft makes it perfect for year-round wear. Runs large, order down a full size.
If you have been following me for any length of time, you know my current jewelry obsession is Missoma. They are my everyday pieces that elevate even the most casual of outfits. I am such a plain-Jane essentials kind of girl, yet these Missoma pieces are a crazy toe-step into the cool realm! I have fun creating different layered looks with these necklaces and pendants.
