A denim jacket instantly elevates a look, but at the same time, it exudes almost the opposite effect. It says I know I look cool without screaming it at you as a leather jacket would. Yet both the denim jacket and the leather jacket function very similarly in how you style it with other pieces in your wardrobe. Both jackets are the confident layering pieces to your daily outfits, from adding a little finesse to casual wear to a bit of funk in your business wardrobe or grit to a feminine dress.
The key to your favorite denim jacket is the fit. Due to the denim material’s nature, the denim jacket is a bit more rigid and hangs straight down due to the fabric’s weight. As opposed to other jackets like leather or wool, which have more give and movement to them. Because of this, a denim jacket must be fitted to your body. I opt for cropped or shorter options since I have a shorter toro. I have often had to order down a size in denim jackets to get the look I am trying to achieve. Honestly, if the fit is right, a denim jacket looks good on almost anyone regardless of body shape.
The denim jacket is an outerwear piece you can use all year round. Lightweight enough for transitional fall and spring days and perfect for unexpected chilly summer nights out. Plus, when the colder winter days hit, you can layer sherpa fleece under it, getting all the good looks of the denim jacket with the coziness of a blanket. Or on the flip side, I like to layer my denim jacket under other larger jackets for coats for a more casual vibe on colder days. A favorite ‘somewhat’ denim jacket is wearing my Veronica Beard denim dickey secretly zipped into one of their dickey-supported jackets. All the fun of a denim jacket without any of the bulk.
What I Am Wearing
What is the first brand that you think of when naming the quintessential Americana denim? Levi’s, of course! Levi’s, with its recognizable double arc stitching pattern (U.S. trademark #1,139,254. If you haven’t guessed it, I am also a nerd) making a resurgence in the casual & luxury jean categories and, of course, the iconic denim jacket. My Levi’s jacket was the perfect layering piece to my otherwise warmer-weather outfit of a sleeveless jumper. With its versatile silhouette, stretch fabric, and ideal length, this classic jacket is my go-to denim jacket and helped me take this summer jumper into fall cooler weather. It runs TTS, but I ordered one size down for a more slim fit.
My denim jumper is not available, but I have linked a similar skirt above. I am obsessed with these Jenni Kayne booties. I wrote about their mules in a recent post, and now I cannot get enough of these beautiful boots for fall. Honesty, I would buy them in every color if my husband wouldn’t divorce me. (If you are reading this and love me, I wear a size 37 in the camel suede 😉 These boots are perfect for when you are searching for a style to elevate an everyday look. They were comfortable from day one, and I love the casual sophistication they bring to my wardrobe. The Chelsea boots are TTS. My Rag & Bone hobo bag is a practical bag with a slouchy silhouette and two large compartments to fit all your essentials. I really like the decorative clip detail and adjustable strap, which can be worn in multiple ways: over your shoulder, as a cross-body, or tucked under your arm.

You pretty much can not go wrong with the right fitting denim jacket in your wardrobe. The only fashion faux pas you can do is wear the same color denim wash in the jean jacket and your jeans. We call that a Canadian tuxedo and many of us cannot pull it off successfully.
