From granny panties to luxe bras, most of us do not give a second thought to our undergarments once we layer our outfit over top. For almost all occasions, wearing the correct undergarments are more important than your clothes. Your undergarments will make or break an outfit, even one as effortless as jeans and a t-shirt or workout clothes.
I recently attended an event and everyone was wearing killer outfits. One attendee in particular was wearing a ravishing, stunning dress. To be honest, it was drop dead gorgeous. I was a little envious of the outfit and her natural beauty. However, the entire outfit was ruined due to her ill-considered undergarments. I am sure she looked exceptional when she was only wearing her bra and panties. How do I know? I could see them through her clothes. Not that her outfit was see through in any manner, yet I could see the material and shape of her undergarments. She was wearing a lavish lace ensemble thong and bra. Most likely they were La Perla knowing the person. Yet, the minor crinkleness the lace created under her outfit was distracting to the otherwise smooth silhouette. Correct outfit, wrong undergarments.
If anyone has a weakness for luxurious intimates, it is me. Just ask my bank account and the owner of my local intimates, shapewear and sleepwear boutique, I.C. London. However, I have learned the hard way that my lacy undergarments are best suited under the appropriate see through, thicker, or layered clothing.
Let us explore the correct undergarments to wear under your clothes. There are almost an infinite number of choices, yet selecting which to wear with what outfit, is key to pulling off a flawless look.
Correct T-Shirt Bra
This seamless cup bra is probably the most important article in your intimates drawer as this is your default bra for almost every occasion. The bra will look invisible under clothing. A t-shirt bra is ideal for wearing under thin, lightweight and form fitting tops. Look for one that provides an opaque layer between your body and your clothing.
Side Smoothing Bras
Sometimes we just need a little smoothing around the edges for an outfit. Literally your side and back edges. Depending on your body shape or if you have fuller breasts a more supportive bra will dig into side and back creating indentations in your silhouette – the dreaded back fat. Many t-shirt bras play double duty and also eliminate this bulging problem.
Creating Cleavage With the Correct Bra
If you have smaller breasts you may want a bra that lifts them up and inward towards each other creating fuller looking cleavage. Select a push-up bra made with minimal fabric that cups the breast properly. If the bra is made with too much fabric, your breasts will not look as natural, and may overwhelm your bust instead of creating attractive cleavage.
Plunging Neckline Bra
The plunge bra is a great option for support if you do not have a comfort level with going braless. Many have straps that convert 4 ways: regular, strapless, halter and criss-cross for endless outfit variations. Some bras offer removable push-up padding if you need to enhance your cleavage.
Strapless and Backless Bras
Sometimes an outfit yields more bare skin and a unique bra is required. Luckily for those of you with more ample breasts (up to an H), there are versions that now give traditional support and stay in place. Verses the one I wore to my high school prom that slowly migrated and slipped down to my waistband halfway through the night. Correct outfit, wrong bra. LOL
The Correct Breast Support Might Be an Adhesive
If it were possible, you would want to go braless for certain outfits. But if you feel your boobs may be too big, too old, or too saggy, you probably do not want to subject others to that visual. So you may need some assistance when a typical bra might show or may make an appearance from under your clothes. Some items are reusable, while others are disposable. For a recent costume party, I used boob tape (yes, that is the actual term) for the first time. It worked surprisingly well, supported my E cup effortlessly, and stayed on through hours of dancing. Although I have to say, taking off my tape made for interesting patchwork of my spray tan.
In reality, the correct thong is more important than the clothes you are trying to showcase. You are surely ruining your wonderful pants, skirts, dresses, leggings or even your favorite pair of jeans if your traditional cotton panties are creating a line across your otherwise smooth cheeks.
Some thongs are a bit more expensive, but they are worth it to wear ones that have an overall seamless construction with raw edges that virtually disappear under clothing (no matter how thin or snug). If you do not feel comfortable wearing a traditional thong then choose one which is a mid or high rise for a little more cheeky coverage. If that is still too bare for your derriere, then choose a high-cut brief. Some versions below also offer tummy shaping control.
Care for Your Undergarments
Your outfit enhancing bra and panties are more important than your clothes, so take care of them. Most laundry instructions say to hand wash and air dry. I always separate and put my bras and panites from the week into lingerie valet bags. I wash them on the delicate cycle in cold water with a special detergent formulated to gently clean, brighten and prolong the life of my fine washables. Afterwards, I hang them up individually to dry. Some of my undergarments I have worn for years and they look practically new.
Choosing the correct undergarments is more important than the clothes you are wearing. Your undergarments will either distract from your outfit or enable them to shine as you intended.
