A slip dress is one of the most flattering cuts to wear on the body. Mainly because the dress is cut on the bias. Anything on the bias is typically complementary to your shape as it hugs the small part of your waist, skims over your hips, and wisps around your legs. Unfortunately, most of us can not wear them. Typically designers cut them so low that most women feel very exposed, showcasing that much chest. Additionally, because of the thin straps (generally sans brassiere), almost all of the shoulders and arms are revealed, leaving little to the imagination unless you are adept at layering. So the next best thing that realistically any body shape can wear is a bias-cut skirt—all the favorable attributes of the slip dress without any inherent flaws.
A bias-cut skirt is the perfect 12-month skirt. Honestly, every woman should have several hanging in her closet. Typically the fabric is more warm-weather friendly such as cotton, satin, or silk as they flow and drape more beautifully than a heavier weight fabric. The advantage of these lighter fabrics is they can also be worn in the winter. The flattering cut lends itself to camisoles, tees, tanks, and halter tops in the summer and yet to long sleeve shirts, bodysuits, and even sweaters in colder months. The key to this year-round skirt is in choosing the right solid or pattern. Select ones that you can pair with items from your summer and winter wardrobes. Even a dusty pink bias-cut skirt can be paired with a heavier sweater and booties when it is colder outside.
The right fabric is essential to pulling off the success of the bias cut skirt. Quality silk or satin will smooth out the lumps and bumps, not accentuate them. If you need additional smoothing, then layer shapewear underneath. Choosing the other items to coordinate with your skirt is where the magic happens for this look. The season will dictate the appropriate shoe. From sandals and sneakers to pumps and booties, almost anything coordinates with this flattering skirt. The bias-cut skirt is one of the few items with year-round appeal. It can be dressed up or down according to your mood or occasion. There are not many pieces I could wear to the ballpark as well as a cocktail party.
What I Am Wearing
There is nothing like an LBS (Little Black Skirt) to round out your essential wardrobe. This high waisted, satin, Express bias-cut skirt in pitch black is currently on sale for only $39.99. I mean, seriously?? And the good news is it comes in eight colors. I think I am also going to order the rose color. The waistband rolls when not being worn or on the hanger. I was concerned it would do the same thing while wearing it. Luckily, the waistband doesn’t roll nor slip when on and lays flat against my stomach for a smooth fit. The skirt is TTS.
The Amazon knit tank is a chunky rib that adds stylish substance to this essential cotton-blend tank that’s ready to layer or wear solo. It is a loose fit, so size down for a regular fit. I actually sized down two sizes for a more slim fit. It is part of The Drop collection. Amazon partners with international influencers to design of-the-moment collections that could release at any instant and are gone in 30 hours or less. Yet this tank is part of their Staples by The Drop, so it is a standard item. They run out of sizes quickly, but they come back into stock almost as fast.
My Levi’s jacket was the perfect layering piece to this otherwise warm-weather outfit. The late afternoons start to be a little brisker, and I needed a more casual jacket to wear out to lunch. This classic jacket from Levi’s has been worn and loved by just about everybody. With a versatile silhouette, stretch fabric, and perfect length, it is my go-to denim jacket. This denim jacket helped to transition a dressier outfit into a laid-back look.
I recently wrote about my new favorite shoe brand, Marion Parke. Her shoes have revolutionized the luxury footwear industry by disguising an orthotic shoe with beautiful craftsmanship and modern styling. From flats to boots to stilettos, these are the most comfortable luxury shoes I have ever worn. My post highlighted many styles on sale with different retailers. Hopefully, there are still options available in your size!
To finish off my outfits, I wear the same gold jewelry pieces almost every day from Missoma. I might change the layering style slightly, yet essentially they are my favorite go-to pieces that I cannot live without. I am already obsessing over some of their newer pieces.
