How to Get Glowing Skin

Healthy children have naturally glowing skin. It is a desired and sought after youthful feature as an adult. So how do we get back that glowing skin that we once ignored? There are two essential components as an adult that you must incorporate into your daily routine to achieve year-round glowing skin.

Youthful skin has a faster cell turnover rate. These new skin cells are quickly pushed to the surface, naturally sloughing off the thin layer of dead skin on the outermost surface. This quicker renewal process also helps kids to heal faster from scrapes, cuts, and bruises. These newly created skin cells enable the skin to appear more plump, bright, and translucent creating a canvas of beautiful, healthy, glowing skin

Around the age of twenty-five, that cell turnover rate starts to slow down, creating rough, dry, opaque, and dull complexion as dead skin cells accumulate on the surface of the skin. With each decade, the turnover rate declines, thus increasing a thicker layer of dead skin cells on the surface. Pores tend to get clogged and enlarged at this stage, and light cannot reflect evenly off the surface, creating the appearance of dull skin. Exacerbating the issue even further, this increased layer of dead surface cells forms a barrier between your skin and your skincare products, often rendering them less effective.

So how do you get your youthful, glowing skin to reappear? Different forms of daily exfoliation are crucial to gain back that glow. A good analogy is to think of your lawn in the fall season scattered with layers of fallen leaves. It is difficult for nutrients and water to penetrate through this barrier of leaves to the surface of the ground. That is why we rake the leaves away, to enable the surface and roots to function optimally. Our skin is similar. As we grow older, we need increasing help to exfoliate off the dead surface cells so that our bright, radiant, and glowing skin shine through.

Exfoliation – Your Key to Glowing Skin

There are two exfoliation methods:

  • Physical exfoliation – uses tiny particles to push dead skin cells off the surface of the skin
  • Chemical exfoliation – dissolves the bonds that keep dead skin cells attached to the surface

Physical Exfoliators

A physical exfoliator may be a scrub or facial cleanser that lightly exfoliates dead skin cells off the surface. You utilize your fingers to manually manipulate the product over the skin for a short duration. It may contain exfoliating ingredients such as salt and sugar crystals, alpha-hydroxy acid, or kaolin clay.

Chemical Exfoliators

Usually found in a toner, serum, mask, or treatment product, a chemical exfoliator dissolves dead surface cells. Key ingredients may be polyhydroxy acids, lactic acid, or retinol.

Using Exfoliators for Best Results

Utilizing both forms of exfoliation will yield the best results. They perform different functions and are vital to the success of your results. In the same way, you would not choose a toothbrush or toothpaste. You need them both to work in conjunction. They are both cleaning your teeth, yet function differently.

All exfoliators on the market are not created equal. It is critical not to damage aging or thinning skin by using an exfoliator that is not intended for the condition of your skin. Some have only minimal amounts of ingredients where others might be too harsh, irritating, or cause an inflammatory reaction. Never use an exfoliator that is exclusively formulated for the body. These are not meant for the delicate skin on your face and neck.

Adding Vitamin C for Glowing Skin

Additionally, using a stabilized form of a topical Vitamin C with your skincare routine will boost your skinโ€™s radiance and overall brightness. Vitamin C promotes collagen production, which reduces fine lines, and has the potential to reach the deepest layers of our skin to fortify. All of these Vitamin C benefits help us get our glowing skin back.
